New Family Navigation Center Opens in Cape Coast
The center will serve as a one-stop resource for families navigating the healthcare system, offering counseling, referral coordination, and insurance guidance.
JKAID Hope Foundation officially opened its first dedicated Family Navigation Center in Cape Coast on 5 December 2025. Located on Kotokuraba Road in the heart of the city, the center provides a one-stop resource for families of critically ill children, offering counseling, healthcare referral coordination, insurance enrollment assistance, and emotional support services.
The center was inaugurated by the Central Region's Director of Health Services, alongside JKAID leadership and representatives from partner hospitals including the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and the Ewim Polyclinic. Over 50 community members attended the opening ceremony, many of them parents whose children had previously received support from JKAID.
"Navigating Ghana's healthcare system can be overwhelming, especially when your child is seriously ill," said the JKAID Program Manager at the opening. "This center exists to ensure that no family has to face that journey alone. Our navigators will walk alongside them from diagnosis through treatment and recovery."
The Family Navigation Center is staffed by three full-time navigators — trained social workers with specialized knowledge of Ghana's pediatric healthcare landscape. Services include: mapping the fastest referral pathways between hospitals and specialists; assisting with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) enrollment and claims; connecting families with JKAID's Treatment Fund for surgical and medical cost coverage; providing psychosocial counseling for parents and siblings; and coordinating transport and accommodation for families traveling to Accra for specialist treatment.
The center also houses a small resource library with health education materials in English, Twi, and Fante, as well as a children's play area to make visits less stressful for young patients. Free Wi-Fi is available so families can access online health resources and communicate with medical teams.
In its first month of operation, the center has already assisted 34 families, with 8 children fast-tracked to specialist appointments at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The most common presenting conditions have been congenital heart defects, sickle cell complications, and suspected childhood cancers.
JKAID plans to open additional Family Navigation Centers in Kumasi and Tamale during 2026, building a national network that ensures families across Ghana have local access to support. The Cape Coast center is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and walk-ins are welcome.
